ARC 2523 - Building Structures

Project 1 Fettuccine Truss Bridge

Principles of selecting structural systems and designing elements and structures, soil mechanics on the design of footings and building behaviour.

In a group of 5, we are to design and build a Fetuccine Truss Bridge to be tested to fail and analyse the design's efficiency. First, we had to carry out a precedent study, then design and construct a fettucinibridge of 750mm clear span and maximum weight of 200g to be tested to fail. The analysis of material strength and structural analysis of the truss are then documented in a report. The report also includes a separate calculation task.

The purpose of this project is to develop the students' understanding of tension and compressive strength of construction materials, force distribution in a truss, and for students to explore ways to design a perfect truss bridge with high level of aesthetic value with minimal construction material.

Project 2 Extension of a R.C. Bungalow

In a group of 8, students are required to design an extension for an R.C. Bungalow with our knowledge of structural theory, force calculation and basic structural proposal. In this project, we first had to produce a complete documentation of the Bungalow; this includes plans, elevations and sections of the bungalow. We then have to explore and understand the structures of the bungalow and produce structural plans. We then have to understand basic procedures of building structure design and produce a structural proposal of the extension.

The extension design is done in pairs. We then perform quantitative structural analysis for the extension we have designed. The following is the criteria for the design of the extension:

  • The area of extension should not exceed 30% of the existing floor area (max 100m2 each floor)

  • The extension should be sideway

  • The extension should be of two storeys (foundation plan, ground and first floor plan and roof plan)

From the extension design produced, each member needs to analyse a minimum of 6 beams and 4 columns.

The following is the report with the group's complete documentation of the existing bungalow and each pair's extension proposal, and the quantitative analysis I have done.
