ARC 2312 - Thinking Architecture (elective)

A reading/looking/listening/thinking module aimed at raising a student’s consciousness to direct processes to analyse underlying premises, form general philosophical attitudes and promote experience in design which are consistent with basic worldviews and personal values.

Project 1 THINK SHEETS

Project Duration:  weekly

A Think Sheet is a single page typewritten submission of the students' thoughts in response to an assigned reading. A reading will be given to the students every week for 10 weeks and students should write a think sheet in response to the reading and submit it at the beginning of the class. All students in the class will go around reading each others' think sheets and then discuss about the topic.

The Think Sheet is meant document the reader's own thoughts in response to the reading. It need not even be on the same topic as the reading, although it is important to identify what it was in the reading that stimulated the reader's thoughts. Each Think Sheet should be personal and should reflect the reader's own experiences and values as they relate to the subject of the class.

Every student is meant to submit onlyy 8 think sheets out of the 10. It was a really interesting class as it really gets everyone to properly analyse the readings and to express their thoughts in the classroom. This interactive project also got the students different perspectives from the reader through reading others' think sheets and we were able to discuss openly each others' thoughts.

Project 2 PERSONAL VALUE STATEMENT:

Defining Personal Values for Design

Project Duration: 8 weeks

Project 3 DESIGN PROJECT

Project Duration: 4 weeks

A Personal Values Statement outlines one's character and defines personality. No two persons are the same. This is a personal endeavor starting by completing a survey followed by exploration and deep introspection in order to gain a new or renewed perspective of yourself.

In this project, students were required to write a 3 to 4 page Personal Value Statement which intends to raise the consciousness of one's own background, experiences, and abilities to promote experience in design that are consistent with one's personal values. Its purpose stems from the notion that design solutions result not only from objective criteria of user needs, site demands, available technologies, economic constraints, etc. but also from an often hidden agenda of designer attitudes or theories. It is hoped that, by making these explicit, student can not only sharpen skills in bringing such attitudes to their full fruition, but also progress toward a clearer, more thoughtful formulation of the student's personal design values.

This project enhanced my critical thinking and enabled me to be more aware of issues surrounding me. I've also developed the skill of taking a position regarding the issues. Most importantly, this project allows me to properly study and analyse myself which results in understanding myself better.

This task is to design a memorial for MH17 tragedy that encapsulates the student's personality, based on one's Personal Values Statement, in a poetic and considered manner. A competition brief was used as the brief for this final design project in which students have to propose a design for a memorial park on a new island in theAmsterdam “Internal Sea” - IJmeer. A digital presentation is presented and submitted at the end of the project.
