Project 1 Alternative Construction Solution and Documentation
Project Duration: 6 weeks
This is an individual project whereby students will employ and demonstrate the knowledge which they have gained in Building Materials, Building Constructions and Building Structures. In this project each student is required to utilize a portion of their own design project in previous semester (Nature Appreciation Centre). Following discussions with the respective tutor, each student should propose the alternative to the existing construction systems to include different, more complex and recent building technologies. Finally, a complete documentation including a report and a set of working drawings of the modified design shall be produced.
From this project, students learn to explore, adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the designs. Students are required to conduct extensive research in construction methods and materials. Documentation of the design and construction methods develops the students’ skills in producing working drawings.
For the purpose of this project, changes should be carried out on the following building systems and components:
-
Floor system
-
Wall system
-
Roof system
-
To include a new basement level (shown only in sections)
Precedent studies of existing buildings which currently employs the same systems as proposed by students should be conducted in order to apply the system into the project. In addition, a detailed description of all the construction systems used (materials properties, manufacturer, etc.) as well as analysis of the advantages and/or disadvantages of both the existing systems and the new systems proposed should be provided. The report includes documents of the precedent study as well as appropriate working drawings and detail drawings of the building.

Project 1 Industrialised Building System
Project Duration: 7 weeks
This is a group project which predominantly relates to the topics of Industrialised Building System (IBS) as well as the materials’ embodied energy. Before embarking on this project students will be exposed with different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials in the classroom. This project consists of two parts. In the first part, each group is required to conduct a case study of a building which was constructed using IBS to understand the components better. In the second part, the group has to construct a model of a 3-storey apartment building to imitate the actual IBS construction process and to record all the process in a video.
From this project, my group members and I understood IBS construction method better. We are more aware of the pros and cons of using IBS system in relation to energy efficiency and ecological impact as well as the appropriateness of using IBS system in a design.
