ARC 1412 - Environmental Sustainable Design
Introduction to environmental issues and the complexities that design and construction professions have to deal with to contain irreversible damage that human settlement causes to the environment.
Project 1 - Go Green 2013 International Short Film Contest
In this project, students are required to make a campaign video or a short film to increase awareness on environmental issues.
In this project, I have travelled around Kuala Lumpur and Penang to investigate the river conditions. It was an eye opener for me as I have never realised how contaminated the rivers are. I have researched and understood the effects of river polution. I have also recognised the negative impact of construction sites have on rivers.
Project 2 - Appreciating Environment
Nothing is Considered Waste
In a group of 4, students are required to visit 2 sites, collect data on wastes and waste management and report them on a research poster. The Research poster should also include a research on Life Cycle Analysis, environmental impact of the construction industry and innovative ways to reuse and recycle wastes.
We were also required to use waste materials collected on site and create a creative product to raise awareness. This is to be done individually.

Creative Product
The product is a flower pot holder made of Reinforcement Bar. The globe is made of HDPE conduit pipe with metal wire surrounding it and connecting it to the holder. The concept is that Earth is in the hands of the flora. Without the “Greens”, global warming would occur on Earth bringing harmful effect to the people.
Through this assignment, I have a better understanding on how much waste are produced on site and how they are handled in local construction sites. I have understood that some wastes are inevitable. However, through research, I have found out that there are innovative and creative methods that can be adopted to reduce and recycle wastes. I have learned how the construction industry have a signicant impact on the environment and this can be overcome if serious measures are taken.
